TACHYCARDIA

Tachycardia is a broad term for a variety of rapid cardiac arrhythmias.1,2 It is commonly associated with underlying cardiac abnormalities.1,2 If left untreated, in serious cases, this can lead to heart failure or cardiac arrest.3,4

TREATING A TACHYCARDIA

Patients presenting with a tachycardia should be treated according to symptoms and etiology.5 Adenosine, beta-blockers, or calcium channel blockers may be used as first-line treatment,1,6 although pharmacological treatment is poorly defined for an atrial tachycardia.7 For drug-resistant tachycardias, cardioversion may be considered.1,2

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) devices are indicated in adult patients who have already survived a cardiac arrest or are at a high risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) due to ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF).8
